

In my case, I’ve found being in marketing meetings, casting meetings, and play selection meetings helpful.

Luis: That’s another thing that’s so beautiful about the residency-the relationships formed and where they can lead. My play Bad Hombres/Good Wives, which San Diego Rep is going to produce in October, was not part of the first selection six months ago, but two other plays fell through, so I said, “You guys want a Latinx comedy? Here it is.” And they said, “Okay. Herbert: We have an advantage, being playwrights in residence, that in a sense they have to consider our work. That there are all these pieces they have to fit together. And then there’s work they want that’s not available. People might love it, but maybe the timing’s not right or the cast’s too large. It’s helpful to know not to take it too personally if your work isn’t chosen.

Herbert Siguenza: It’s good to get an inside view of an institution, how they program their seasons. What have you learned being inside the theatre that you think other playwrights should know?
